It was number 1 vs. number 2, a battle that the Regis Rugby Team had been waiting for all year long. The winner of this game would be going to the State Championship Game at Xfinity Park in late May.
The game was ready to begin at 6pm, it would all start with a great punt by Maxfield to gain an advantageous field position that the Raiders could defend their end zone from. The scrum that resulted from Maxfield’s punt saw East take field from the Raiders. However, the Raiders fought back to gain the ball, a major turning point in the game.
The remainder of the game was all Raiders Rugby with East being dominated by the physical presences of Drew Schlagel, Cade Alcock, Matt Peppercorn, and the rest of the team. To start the scoring, the Raiders put two kicks through the uprights giving them an early and unexpected 6-0 lead. This was only the beginning of what would soon become a very one sided rugby game. The first try of the game would be scored by Schlagel using his raw physical strength and explosive speed to drive past the East defenders. The score was now 13-0.
Schlagel would also score the team’s second try to extend the lead by another 7 points. With the score after the second try being 20-0. The rest of the game continued in the same fashion and the Raiders seemed to be proving themselves as the new number 1 seed. The Raiders would score one more try to end their scoring for the game to 25 points. East was almost shut out, but in the last minute of the game, they were able to break the Raiders defense and score a try.
The game would end at a score of 25-5 with the Raiders beating East for the 3rd time in the history of the program, and taking the number 1 seed from them. The Raiders had something to prove after last year’s tough loss in the state title game to East, and they sure sent a well heard message to East this year after this very intense game.
