The age of technology is affecting Regis Jesuit High School. Regis Jesuit’s iPad program began as a tool for education but is now negatively affecting the social aspect of the Regis Jesuit Community. Regis Jesuit is not the only school realizing the issue of technology in the classroom. Many schools are struggling with finding the balance between being current and building a community. According to an article in The New York Times (Here) this is a common theme throughout developed nations.

The new iPad program has faced Regis Jesuit with many challenges. The iPad program was an idea to transition all school books and materials onto one device. This required the whole student body to purchase and use iPads. The program came with many benefits including an inexpensive way to access all textbooks and an increase in organization.

“iPads have extremely helped me in chemistry, especially for note taking because it allows the teacher to supplement our notes with her writings,” Junior Austin Hartman said.

iPads have also had some fallbacks. Students struggle with staying focused because their “notebook” now has unlimited games and internet access. Senior Nick Gervasini commented on how iPads have replaced conversation with who has the highest score in the latest game.

Gervasini stated “My freshman year only a couple kids had iPads now everyone does. It used to be all the clubs were a big deal and everyone talked. Like cookies for example you wouldn’t just get cookies then go to your iPad. You would just sit down and have cookies with your gents.”

Overall, the pros and cons of the iPad program are still being tallied up. It will take at least another year to truly understand the effect.
